what to do about timing belt?
Hi, I have a 1997 A6 avant that has 120,000 miles. I need to replace the timing belt / water pump, right? Do I need to take it to the dealer, or can I do it myself? (I'm a pretty good mechanic, have most all the tools etc.) About how much should it cost, do I need any special tools? Also I'm having trouble finding a repair manual. Any info or advice would be a great help. THANKS

I replaced a leaky thermostat on the green car a couple years ago, and found that you need the tool that holds the cam sprockets in place, as well the the one that locks the crankshaft. Other than those two, I don't remember anything unusual. In fact, 'cause there's so much room to work in that engine compartment, I thought it was quite easy.

Its a fairly easy DIY job to do the TB maintenance. Just use the two special tools (#3242 and #3243) to ensure that you set the camshaft timimg correctly. SFTAs and you'll find lots of info
