Default Rear Deck Speakers - Tip - A4 B5

Hi All,

The foam surrounds on the factory rear deck speakers finally died in my 1998 A4 TMQS so I used it as an excuse to update the entire stereo (yep, get rid of the cassette deck and get something bluetooth literate).

I am not going to go into the whole install here, but wanted to post a tip. I used these adapter rings to mount standard 6.5" speakers in the rear deck: CT25AU04 Audi A4 165mm Rear Side Panel Stereo Speaker Adaptor Ring 1994 2001 | eBay

One issue: the adapter rings raise the mounting height of the speakers - so the height of the speakers themselves becomes critical: if the tweeter sticks up too high, they will not fit under the factory rear deck grilles. For example, the Kenwood KFCX173 does NOT fit (found out the hard way). The Alpine SPE-6000 DOES FIT - and I think sound fine (though my goal was not a killer stereo, just something that was a nice step up from stock).

PS - you WILL need to lead a new set of speaker wires from the rear deck to whatever head unit you decide to install (not that hard, but some added fuss) as the factory wiring is both confusing and low gauge (meant for line level not speaker wiring).

Hope this helps someone out,

AndyHN
