Just bought a 2.7t! Had some questions about shop estimates.
Hello all! My name is Marko, and I'm now a proud owner of a 2003 2.7t.
I got a great deal on it, $6k! friend of a friend. It has a small oil leak, I brought it in to a local shop and had an estimate done.
They said that the Valve Cover Gasket is leaking a bit. They quoted me $65 per gasket set and $324 for labor, Total $454.00 to have both gaskets changed.
I don't have a lot of mechanical experience but I'm more than willing to learn. Is this something I could manage with some knowledgeable friends and a manual?
Also, the car has 74k mi on it and I believe that the timing belt and water pump haven't been changed yet. The shop quoted me $450 parts and $650 labor. I definitely don't trust myself with this, so is $1100 reasonable? Or could I even do this job myself?
Thanks guys -- looking forward to doing some work on the car!

Well I am not sure if 6K is a great deal or not but i will let the other 2.7t guys chine in on that ( i payed 1K for my 20000 2.8 )
I have the same leaks and I can get the gaskets for about 21.00 per side, i figure it will take me about half a day to do both sides as i will be doing the tensioner gaskets and cam plugs at the same time. I enjoy doing this stuff so will take my time . BTW the Audi is my only car that leaks more oil than my 911 so i don't think itis a big deal if it leaks,,
i also did my own timing belt. Got a whole kit for about 349 but wish I had gotten a water pump right from Audi a there have been a few horror stories lately. It was challenging as the whole front end of the car has to come off . if a guy will do it for about 1200 i think that is a fair deal and seams to be about average.

both estimates are reasonable. With help here and a bentley, you could easily do the gaskets yourself. 75 is right on time for the TB and $1100 is a fair quote for a 2.7t, depending on where you live. I paid about that in Metro NYC a few years back.

Agreed that both estimates are fair. I paid about $1400 parts and labor for TB, water pump, and all the related seals.
Also, my water pump did start to leak before I had it replaced. It was very intermittent at first but slowly became more frequent. I also had a minor oil leak but that was resolved by having all the seals replaced.

So, new update. The guy dropped the price of the car $1,000 total for the car is 5k now!
I'm definitely going to have the shop do the timing belt and I hope I can get some money off if I also do the valve cover gaskets and cv boot at the same time.
Hopefully I can get all this done for $1500 or else I'll do the valve cover gaskets myself and ideally not mess up the car while I'm at it.

After agressively looking for a 2.7t over the past 4-5 weeks, I can tell you that if there are no problems with the car other than needing the timing belt service, 5k for a 2003 2.7t with that low milage is an AMAZING price. If its a 6speed manual, it would be even more amazing, but even with Tip, its a steal at that price. Congrats!
