Rubbing on front 2 wheels, any suggestions???
I am running 234/45 cooper tires, on 17x7.5 s4 wheels on my 96a6q, on my front 2 wheels the upper control arm is slightly rubbing the inside of the tire, someone told me not to put wheel spacers on an audi because it will cause a vibration, i have read about other people running the same size tire and wheel and having no rubbing issues, why it rubbing on my car? any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks Mark

Hmmm, Could be caused by the Q suspention. I run the same size on a 100cs Non Q and have no issues. Are the wheels factory or replicas. The reason I ask is because you might have a differant offset. I have MHT wheels and my offset is 45 (larger offset than Audi spec wheels) If its rubbing is very slight, and you are considering using spacers, get the thinnest needed to resolve your issue. This will minimizing if not affect your vibration concerns. Other than that, I'm stumped.

Whenever you go beyond the maximum OEM recommended tire/wheel size, you can run into problems...
Beside the obvious interferrence problem (rubbing), handling, stresses on the suspension components due to excessive eccentric loading, etc. can occur. My recommendation - replace the tire/wheels with the maximum tire size, which are 215/60R15 tires and 7-1/2 J x 15 wheels. Note that the offset for these is 40 mm.

yes they are the factory s4 wheels, either from a 2000 or 2001 i am not sure of the offest, is it possible that an alignment might resolve this issue, i just replaced both tie rod ends and did not measure distance, so alignment is way off, this is also when i first noticed rubbing issues

Could just be the allignment. (Is it rubbing on both sides?) Also if it is close
I would either switch wheels or go w/ thin spacers. Just cause under regular road conditions, it could still bump over and rub. I once had this problem years ago. Where as everything was fine under ideal conditions, but if I went over bumps or potholes, the top of my tire would rub against the wheel well insert. I know it's not the same issue you have, but I'm sure you get what I'm saying. Bottom line,. Get the car alligned first, since it needs it anyway. Then go from there and determine if need spacers or want to switch wheels. I'm sure you would rather solve the problem since you've allready invested in the new wheels. Only 1 more thing I would keep in mind. With my wheels, they are heavier. I will be doing my Transmission service in shorter intervals. (due to the extra weight and the increased resistance)The major down side is the heavier wheels add to an allready sluggish car) I guess I'll just have to spend more on upgrades, and try to increase HP anyway I can to compensate.
I wish you the best of luck
Can you post a pic of the wheels? I'd also like to see how much they stick out.
Thanks

also notice, that 7.5" rims designed for 225mm tires. Wider tires are misshaped when mounted and
provide lesser grip. Besides buying cheap wide tires is simple show-off. I bet he would be better with nerrow, but more high end tires.

Would running 225 50 17 instead of 225 45 17 be of any concern? The overall diameter goes...
up about an inch but perhaps it would fill out the wheel arches on my Quattro and give a better ride as well...

Re: I was running 245/40 on S4 wheels, but had to run 5mm spacers for the same exact reason
If i add spacers will i need longer lugbolts? also anyone who has installed spacers, do they cause extra vibrations? thanks, Mark
