when a server goes down...
what exactly does that mean? time for the "three finger salute"?
you don't own the servers, right? just rent / lease capacity, right?
sorry for the 20 questions... just curious

We own all of our own infrastructure
We own all of the hardware that runs the websites. The servers are physically at a colocation facility.
We use multiple webservers which are used to load balance the website. This allows us to scale the capacity of the site (just add more) as well as provide some fault tolerance (one goes down, the others still continue running).
When the server goes down, it can mean either that it's fully dead and requires a power cycle or that it's so busy it's stopped doing anything useful (ie process out of control swapping to death).
Some cases it's using our managed power strip to reboot the server, sometimes it's just being patient and letting the out of the control process get killed.

He should work on removing that awful side-ad.
Nobody who posts here would ever click it anyway, and only people who post here see it when they are logged in. I bet >75% of your click-thrus come from non-members or from members with <5 posts. What a crock of ****. I thought this was a site by enthusiasts for enthusaists, not a dot-com.
