Default From production to delivery.. 1 month?

Hi all.

I ordered a new S5. Dealership told me production date will be Jan the 11th with an estimated delivery date (US) of mid February. Can this process be so quick?

I was looking at the papers on my current BMW and from production to "in delivery center" was about 1 months so I guess 6 weeks is realistic.

IIRC, my car arrived in the USA 5 weeks later, but got hung up at the port for a number of days due to back log.

Yes, that's reasonable depending on where your dealer is located. Mine was 5 weeks from production date to delivery but my dealer is located one hour from the port in Rhode Island, the closest port in the U.S. from Germany. A port farther away and a dealer inland from the port would likely take longer. Some of the variables: how fast the car can be loaded on an available ship in Emden, weather in the Atlantic, location of the U.S. port, how quickly it takes for the car to get through port and customs inspection, how quickly a truck or train can be loaded in port and transit distance to your dealer from the port.

My S5 was stuck in customs for two weeks, due to reduced funding from congress for the customs service. Thanks a lot, congress. Picked up in Ingolstadt two weeks after leaving factory.

My understanding is that cars that come directly from the manufacturer by RoRo ship sail through U.S. port customs pretty quickly while cars picked up at the factory and driven by the customer prior to shipment are subject to a significantly increased inspection. Since these are typically one off situations, they apparently don't have the customs priority of the direct from factory shipments. I assume U.S. Customs figures since the car was in the customer's possession before shipment, there's a increased chance for hidden contraband or U.S. non-approved modifications.

i just ordered my S5 last weekend and was given the same time line as you so I'd say it's accurate.
