Oil Change Intervals
Anyone have any insight on proper oil change intervals? I know the manual says 7500 but that seems a bit high. I do not race or drive overly aggressively, but I do like to ring her out a bit and let it run in its performance envelope. Also some feedback on the oil types that seem to work well for MidWest location (Ohio).

Here is what I do on the 30V
Greetings from Michigan.
1. For the cold Michigan climate, I use either 0W-40 or 5W-40. 0W-40 is made by Mobil, and 5W-40 is made by Shell. Both synthetic of course.
2. I strongly recommend to use synthetic oil and reputable filter (i.e. no Fram).
3. Depending on the type of driving patterns I change oil between 7.5 - 10k miles. On my wife's car I change it closer to 7.5k because she drives 90% short distances (5 miles or less). Oil seems to get contaminated faster (visual inspection) probably because the engine sees more wear and tear during these short trips. On my car which 80% is spend on highway I go as high as 10k miles. Oil looks really nice and clean for much longer than on my wife's car.
3. Sorry if this is too generic and unscientific but without oil sampling it is hard to predict optimal change intervals.

No that is exactly what I was looking for, just some guidelines from other people, taking into account that we do not empirical oil analysis data. I appreciate the input!

When using syn I will let it go about 6k.......
.... when using a oem filter. If using dino it is changed at 3k. Oil weight is a big subject but in the PNW with mild winters I run 10-40 / 15-50 or 20-50. I also use syn blend / syn and dino depending on my mood. I have taken a number of I-5 cars to the 300k mark using 20-50 dino changed regularly at about 3k and these engines were in fantastic shape at that 300k mark. If I lived in your area the 0-40 (or 10-30) oils would be my winter choice and then the 50wt oils would be the summer choice.

What would you suggest for a good all-season oil
IE, one that I can have them use and if it takes me from say August to December here in Ohio it is not going to be hurting from having summer oil.

For my Passat (2.8L 30V ATQ engine code) I use the M1 0w-40 in winter and 5w-40 in summer with Mann
or equivalent (OEM brand) oil filter and go 5k miles, as this is the VW change interval and the drivetrain is warranted to 100k miles. It is a 2000 MY w/ 85k miles on it and does not "use" any oil (less than 1/4 qt ever added between changes). You could probably go longer, but why risk it? You can get Valvoline full synth at NAPA stores here in 5w-40 and that seems at least as good as the M1.
You likely have the AHA 30V 2.8L which has slightly different emissions specs, but likely is virtually identical in most respects - you have a single coil and plug wires, correct?
There is also no reason why you couldn't go with the M1 0w-40 year round. I personally like a thicker oil in the summer for idling in traffic w/ A/C running.

I use AMSOIL. Its a full Synthetic with phenominal 4 bearing rating. My good friend got me hooked on the junk. He has put 45,000+ miles on his Excursion with one oil change. The Guy he gets his oil from has put over 80K on his Camery. At the regular intervals, instead of changing your oil, you change the filter, take a sample and send it to OAITESTING for analysis. For $52 I got A pre change engine flush,WIX oil filter, and six qts of oil. check the site for App.If you do the flush, get a crappy Checker oil filter to run the flush through.

http://www.oaitesting.com</a
