Eddie@Tirerack ... need advice
I'm looking for more performance than my stock 215/55-16 ContiTouring, but not necessarily max performance. I would pay about $180/tire.
I've been considering 245/40-18's and 245/45-17's because I like the aggressive fat look of big tires. Important characteristics include dry and wet handling as well as durability (at least 20K of tread life), with normal (touring tires)levels of road noise.
Any recommendations?

Sure thing.
First it depends upon your tire size. Within the pricerange, your BEST option will be the S03s (and not your most expensive). Also for a great ride quality, look at the Dunlop Sp9000s as well.
Give me a call, as I have some questions for you that can help to narrow it down. Call me when you are ready!
Thanks!
