I plan on buying the oem part now. I know this post is long after the original, but for anyone considering the cheaper replacement oil level sender... DONT DO IT! buy oem.

Did this fix your problem? I'm having the exact problem with my 2001/2.7t: sensor warning light is off after sensor replacement, but now the gauge doesn't work! I'm baffled big time.

What company makes the sensor you bought?

Meyle made it! Piece of crap. Pulled it out and put in the OEM (Hella), and everything works great now. This thread has been a great help by making the troubleshooting easy.

Is yours the 2.8 or 2.7t. mine is also a 2001 but should be the same. the audi dealership sold me a little plug type thing that is the oil temp sensor. can't find the bugger anywhere is it truly inside that oil level sensor on the bottom of oil pan?

Mine is a 2.8

Crawl under the front of the car and look at the oil pan . oh I think you might have to take off the under body tray not sure. You will see the sender in the pan bottom.

Default 2000 a6 2.8L - AHA

Hope I'm not waking a dead thread here.

I've got a good but leaking sender, but my engine has it mounted on the top of the oil filter/ oil cooler feed ports.

My pan is completely smooth - no sender.

I'm losing about .5 qt/day. (Sometimes none - same commute...weird)

Anyone else in that position? I think mine is a single pole (wire) threaded type sender rather than the 3-bolt pan mounted version.

It should be to the right of the crank shaft pulley. It's pretty hard to get to with out putting the front end into service position. How sure are you that this is the source of your oil leak?

see this tread: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho...il+temp+sender

I think that's your oil pressure switch, not the oil temp sensor like on the 2000 and earlier cars. The oil temp sensor is next to the crank pulley on the driver's side.
