Did you notice that there is a "kick down" point on the clutch?

Did you notice that there is a "kick down" point on the clutch?
If you push all the way down with normal pressure you will reach a point you think is the end. If you push with all your might, you notice the clutch pedal goes down like 1/4 of an inch. What is this extra gap used for? I checked all my other manual cars...nothing like that on any of them.
