Default Questions regarding transmission/driveline

Hello!

I've got a 2000 A6 Avant Tiptronic Automatic with some fun things I have to diagnose and fix, related to the driveline and the transmission. I was hoping some of you might point me in the right direction and save some troubleshooting time for me. Here's the background issues:

I noticed some pronounced clunking when accelerating from a stop, and worse when accelerating from a stop and turning left or right at the same time. First thought was that it was a CV joint failure. I got under the car and found the front passenger side outer CV boot blown open and grease everywhere. I replaced that this weekend with a new complete axle assembly, but the clunking is still there. That axle was shot and the outer CV was shakier than a teenage boy at a school dance. No other CV boots show wear, but I could possibly still have another bad CV joint, there are three outer joints left to check on or replace!

Its very difficult to tell where this clunking is coming from while driving the car, it could be up front, or out back, I have no idea.... it seems to clunk the entire car. It happens under moderate to heavy acceleration. When starting from a stop and accelerating slowly you can avoid the clunk all together.

When shifting from drive into park, there seems to be a lot of "play". If I'm on a slight hill and don't pull the e-brake, the car will roll back or forward a few inches before coming to a full stop. Maybe this is where the clunking is coming from? What can I check here?

I have the Bentley manual on the way to my house, and today I'll probably get back under the car and see how much play the driveshaft has and check the other axles for play too. Possibly a differential problem too? The tires all show even wear across them, on all four corners. Theres no tire scrub or anything abonomal in that regard. The front tires are slighty more worn than the rear, but very even. Don't know if that info helps at all. I'm just a novice!

Any ideas you guys can come up with would be GREATLY appreciated!

Something is loose or some bushing/mount is wasted.

Sweet! I'll just check every single bushing and mount and anything else that could be loose! Which was already the plan...

I was hoping my stupid long post would point out a possible known failure or issue...

Given that it seems to be there under acceleration, I'd also look at the motor and transmission mounts. Also, if you can get the vehicle up on a lift, see if there's any movement or noise when you shake the wheels (bearings?) although the change in suspension geometry when on the lift can sometimes mask this...

Wouldn't hurt to check the exhaust pipe/muffler mounts as well.
