Default trying to ID a 10v

Does anyone happen to know if the serial number 054 103 021 refers to an NF code engine from a '91 Audi 100? I've been trying to make a positive ID of this block (in an '84 cgt), and I suspect it's an NF code. But, the code isn't listed on the left side of the block right below the head where it seems like it should be. All I have is the serial number and then what appears to be 11d down farther on the block. Oh, and the P.O. says he *thinks* it came out of a 100. Any ideas?

Default That's a casting number, which won't do you much good. Many 5cyl engines carry that number.

The engine serial number starts with an asterisk, then the engine code, and then the 6-digit sequential serial number. IE: * NF 123456.

You can see the stamping location in the above picture of my 1991 NF/NG engine right between the #2 and #3 spark plugs. The short block now has a 7A head bolted to it

Now I feel like a bit of an idiot. I looked in that exact same place already, but apparently not hard enough (grease). It is indeed an NF code. Thanks, cuatrokoop, the pic helped a bunch.

Not a problem. That casting number is on my NF, NG and 7A, and I think even on my MC...

Default Look at the first number '054'

that is a later NF engine group. 034 is the 86-91 10V turbo, 035 the early 10V engines including turbo, 077 is the Audi V8, 078 is the Audi V6, 056 is the venerable VAG 4 cylinder, 07Z is the V10 TDI as I recall.
