are goiing to self destruct early in life becasue they are started cold and left to idle for very long periods. I'm sure the manufacturer took this into consideration when adding factory installed remote starters.

MY 2 Audi A4's and 2 VW GTI's were always started cold every day and let idling for 15-30 minutes in the Pennsylvania winters with zero bad effects (no engine problems or oil burning). I do the same for my Q5.

I have the small Deltran Battery Tender that I mainly use for my Vespa and my boat batteries over the winter months. I just make sure to get them fully charged a couple of times, I don't keep them "maintained" all winter like could be done with this product. When I had an old Explorer I would drive that most of the winter so my honda didn't have to experience salt and slush, so I also used the Battery Tender to keep the honda from losing its charge. Worked like a charm. For about $23, it would be an ideal solution for your 7-week hiatus.

With all due respect, that's like saying I smoked and lived until 80 years old so smoking has zero bad effects. Idling a car that long is bad for your car, the environment and your wallet. Audi has never had factory remote starters. Idling a car for along time warms it up much slower than driving causing much more water from combustion to end up in your oil. This will acidify your oil over time causing etching on bearings. If you have a long trip after idling a long time the water boils off mitigating the problem somewhat. Short trips after idling is a bad combination leaving water in the oil.
