AMSOIL user - which type/viscosity?
Looking for input from other Amsoil users (or any input at all); I'm NOT starting a debate about which oil is better, and I've done some homework (i.e. searching through past threads) about various opinions on viscosities, brands, etc. I've used Amsoil in motorcycles and vehicles for years with positive results, so I'm pretty much settled there. What I'm trying to determine now is whether to get their standard synthetic or the European car synthetic and what viscosity.
From what I've read it would seem that I'm splitting hairs at this point. I haven't found much on the European synthetic (Audi-specific, anyway) and opinions vary wildly on viscosity. Generally speaking, I'd probably be fine with a 5w30, 10w30, or 5 or 10w40. It would seem that 30 wt. would help gas mileage vs. 40 wt, but no one has quantified that statement.
I drive an US version '00 FL D2 w/4.2L v8. I live in Florida where it is +90 degrees for half the year, and I can count the number of days we get frost on one hand. It would seem from researching this that a thicker oil is better in hotter climates, but how much does this matter in a water-cooled engine?
Again, I'd probably be fine with whatever type/viscosity I picked, just looking for input to help solidify my decision.
Thanks,
Raz

They claim to have an oil that "meets or exceeds" VAG spec 502.00. That's the one you should focus on.

They claim the 5w40 exceeds that spec, so that's the one I'll go with. I'll provide my review of it when I hit 200k+ miles. Thanks for your response.
FWIW, my Nissan van liked it, started using Amsoil when I got it @ 137K miles; at 196 it wasn't using any oil - less than two quarts in a year at 20K miles per year. That tells me how the previous owner(s) took care of it.
Thanks,
Raz

I used Amsoil 5w40 for the last 50k miles on my '01 A6 2.7 before I sold it to a buddy. Ran great and very quietly, and I did NOT baby it fairly certain he isn't either. He just informed me it's now hit 232k.
I'm very satisfied w/ Amsoil although I wouldn't mind seeing an oil that outperfomed it. That oil would be quite something

My choice is...
AMSoil 10W30 w/1 qt of KZ33. (I'm in Houston for what it's worth).
Changed once a year (in the Spring) whether it needs it or no.
Oil stays clear and oil sample to new ='s not much difference.. (but I change it anyway).
I use the drained AMSoil in the motor home (Cummins M11) which gets annual service too.
(7.5 gals of T6 Rotella) & 2qts of Kz33.
I run less than full since it seems they both kick out a little oil. pc

Both my S8 and A4 are running 10W50 (502.00 approved of course).
I would estimate that should you run a 5W30, or 0W30 oil, you will experience oil consumption. Economy gains will be negligable.

Generally speaking, thin oils are more for cold climates than thick ones are for warm climates. I tend to run as thicker oil as practical in my cars in warm weather, particularly as they both hqve over 100,000 miles under their belts.

FWIW, I've gained 1-2 mpg (5-10%) and when I check the coolant temp using the climate controls it's 1-2 degrees cooler than before (from 90-91 to 88-89 now). We'll see how it is this summer.
Also, I went with the more expensive European formula, which wound up being cheaper with my friend's preferred customer status. Although, reading Adjuster's old thread on this kinda makes me wish I went back to Walmart's synthetic. I used to feel bad about putting that stuff in my cars but not any more.
