Default Early Quattro Owners - Control Arm Recall Info inside...

Thought I would provide a little info on the state of the Control Arm Recall that has recently been discussed.

By putting what I have found in one message maybe other folks will be able to decipher if they are eligible and where to turn for info... we'll see. :-)

Background:
In April, The NHTSA issued a recall notification (No. 01V325) that documented a problem with the rear control arms on early TT Quattro models ONLY. AofA should have sent an Official Notification memo to all affected owners withing 30 days. As of today, no one on AW has posted info relating to such notification.

The issue involves rear control arms that need to be replaced along with their respective ball joints. Two "fix-it" kits are available (see document below for description of parts contained in each kit).

What Cars are effected?
Today, I was able to call my dealer, provide my VIN number and get them to verify that I was indeed a candidate.

VIN's included are: T2000 TT Q's with VIN's UP TO: TRU---8N-Y1060000 & 2000/2001 AS OF TRU---8N-Y1060001

The Kit...
Each group of VIN's require's a different replacement part kit. My dealer confirmed that they had been bulk shipped ONLY 1 of each of the two kits. They will need to order the kit's prior to doing the 3rd install and all installs forward of that.

Check with your dealer to ensure that the kit you need is available. Before you go in to get this fixed.

Estimated time to complete work:
This recall apparently involves a considerable amount of time to complete. There is a 39 page booklet with step-by-step instructions for how the Audi Tech's are to complete the necessary work. As such, Audi will pay each dealer for 2 days of car rental and in my case, they will require the full two days.

Misc:
Word to the wise.. if you, like me, are thinking of having any suspension work done and want your dealer to do the install (for alignment issues or the like), do it at the same time as this recall work is being completed. In my case, it is gonna save me 1/2 of the initially quoted cost to install my new setup... they are going to be working in that area anyway.

Here is the 1st page of the 39 page Recall document sent to all dealers...

In case Fotki cycles the link address in the future, here is the link for the document in my Fotki album... I'll keep it there for awhile:

OK, with all that, I have a question...
What is AofA or your dealer going to say when they see some of the suspension mod's that people have done... will they make us bring our cars up to 'stock' in order to complete the work? Will they VOID warranties?

I am sure we'll know sooner vs. later.

Hope this info helps.

NHTSA Recall Notice

Default Reminds me of the ESP retrofit that required the cars to be "stock" in order to have the work done.

Those of us who were here at that time recall issues of Lo-Jack, aftermarket stereos, and other mods that had to be undone before sending the car to Texas for the retrofit.

I don't know if that will be the case this time, but it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Default Yep. I find the VIN range puzzling since it seems to include every TT before or after ....60001

Also, does anyone know if the "Y" in the VIN sequence they list is supposed to be the numeral for the year of the car? I have nearly the same VIN but a "1" where the letter has the "Y". I don't know how litterally to read it since I'm not familiar with the VIN coding. At first I was happy my VIN didn't match, but now I'm not so sure.

I guess the real answer lies with phoning my dealership, but I would like to know what I'm talking about before I phone them.

Default Looks like all TTQs thru 060000 require one defined set of parts and

all 2000 & 2001 TTQs beginning at 60001 require a different set of parts (including one more part).
