Key Fob wont unlock car.
I am the original owner to my 99 a4. no mods besides audio...(years ago)
recently my keyless entry stopped working. (no maintenance was recently done that would require battery disconnection)
I can unlock the driver door with the key and do the same for all doors and trunk. I can also roll up windows and down with key in drivers door.
I have tried both key fobs. Replaced battery in one and no luck.
I haven't checked fuses b/c I figured if it was fuse related locks on doors wouldn't work at at.
I don't have a vag nor do I know where I can go to borrow to scan for error codes. But I think this may be my required next step.
Anyone deal with this exact same issue recently and find a solution?

My Keyfobs and remote access started acting up just before my car battery died. I also began having trouble playing music from my iPod. Once I replaced the car battery, the gremlins went away.

99.5 original owner here too. My key FOB stopped working recently too. Found the following online and it works:
"Synchronization
If the vehicle cannot be opened by pressing the radio transmitter button, it could be that the code of the key no longer matches that of the control unit in the vehicle. This can occur if the transmitter button is frequently pressed outside the effective range of the system.
The infrared key must be resynchronized. The synchronization process must be completed with 1 minute:
1 - Press either the open button or close button on your radio wave key once for approx. one second. The vehicle will remain locked. The control unit, however, recognizes a valid code.
2 - Now lock or unlock your vehicle using the key.
3 - The key bite is recognised as the valid mechanical code. A new code is defined between the key and the control unit. The synchronisation procedure is complete.
Uncoded second keys can be obtained from Volkswagen dealers. These keys must however be synchronized by a Volkswagen dealer as the code for the immobilizer also has to be initialized in the head of the key. In total, four keys can be used."
