Default Is the panel over the rear wheel aluminium??

I had a Friday the 13th accident and the light weight wheelbarrow hanging off the garage wall for 10 years decided to pull the hanger off the wall. The metal hanger acted as a projectile and went straight to my rear windshield - shattered the glass completely - and wheelbarrow was wedged between my car and the inside garage wall.

Windshield definitely will need to be replaced. Looks like a couple of dents to the panel right above the rear wheel well when the wheelbarrow slid down. Called an authorized collision center specializing in German cars and when I told them that the exterior body panels of the 2013 S6 is aluminium, he said no.

I thought he was 100% incorrect. Yes?

According to this chart, the area in question is cold formed steel. The door frames and rear quarter (shown on the passenger side) are steel. The door skins and front fenders (shown on the drivers side) are sheet aluminum.

Check it with a magnet.

tenspeed, many thanks for the quick info and graphic. I will check with a magnet when I get home. What about the panel sitting to the right and left of the rear windshield and the piece in the rear quarter panels (either side by the trunk)?

I thought the S6 was aluminium cladded on a steel frame. I guess not.

All I know is what's shown on the chart. I thought the body was all aluminum too. I pulled up the chart to double check.

Put a piece of duct tape on the magnet before you start checking to prevent scratches.

Looks like the "A", "B", and "C" pillars are clad in cold formed steel. The rear quarter panels are part of the panel.

Confirmed steel and after S6 was towed to the collision shop this afternoon, they did confirm the same.

Thanks!

You're welcome. Good luck with the repair and think about a shed for that wheelbarrow.
