Default 2001 allroad problems

Hey, I just got a 2001 allroad and im having some overheating problems. The car will overheat and cut off until it cools back Down. The longest I've ever had to wait for it to cool down was 30 minutes.... I've changed all the spark plugs and oil. I'm not sure which coolant to use. I've had the suspension system repaired. I've had it put on a machine at my local mechanic's garage and he couldn't diagnose it. He said he would have to take the engine apart. I'm not sure I want that. As I am new to foreign cars, is this a common problem and does it lead to more problems... I only pay a grand for it but I'm not sure if I will end up investing more money in repairs as opposed to purchasing a certified preowned.... Help please????

Well...If you want the truth, you will spend more money, especially if you continue to drive the car like that. Overheating can lead to many problems including major engine damage. (eg. bent valves)

Is it a common problem for the allroad to overheat...NO!

I think the coolant type for Audi/VW is called G12. It is pink in color as oppose to red. (You can get it a some local auto parts store for about 22.00 for 1.6 quarts...yes I said 1.6 quarts) I bought these from Arch Auto parts in Queens NY. PENTOFROST, made in germany. See website http://www.pentosin.com/shop.php?c=214,231

To be honest I have used the red one for GM dexcool application in my VW (clean fill) and 180,000+ miles and never have any overheating problems or flaky crust build up. (Maybe a chemist here can explain the difference and why not to use it). THAT DOES NOT MEAN I RECOMMEND IT. WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR CAR IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

There are several things that can cause overheating.

1. Restricted flow of coolant through radiator. (radiator dirty and need cleaning)
2. Defective water pump.
3. Defective thermostat.
4. Improper ignition timing (computer controlled on this car)
5. Coolant leak.
6. Defective coolant temperature sensor.

Since you just bought the car, you may want to check on the last timing belt, water pump, and thermostat changed date and mileage. If you are smelling oil burning inside of the car, you may as well change the required gaskets at the same time while the mechanic is in the same location. It is easier to change when the timing belt is off.

yea stop driving it, tow it to a repair shop that does European cars, and get it fixed.
