Default New Rotors at 20k miles?

Every time I've brought my 2011 A8 (20080 miles, I'm on my bikes 70% of the year) in for the proscribed warranty work, I've asked them to look at the brakes. Every time. There has been a persistent squeal with low speed urban braking, such as coming to a slow rolling stop.

Every time "we can't find anything wrong with your brakes". A $95k+ car that squeals upon braking. C'mon.

So Monday, we're just back from a two week vacation. Braking now is a horrible chatter and rumble. I figure it's been sitting for two weeks, the brakes are a bit rusty, just drive it for a day and normal braking will clear the rotors. Nope. Off to the dealership (whom I do like and fully trust).

"You need new rotors. We've called Audi and are waiting to hear back from them". It better be what I want to hear...

When they replace the rotors think about replacing your pads with ceramic ones. Less squealing and tons less dust.
I don't think the dealers turn rotors anymore.

New rotors x4 at no charge, even with just under 50% of the pads left. No explanation as to why, though.

I had exactly that conversation with the Service Advisor. With the ceramics, a definite advantage in the elimination of the brake dust (a constant annoyance on the front wheels, but that's because they're responsible for the bulk of the braking) and the squeal. But, it comes at the expense of increased braking distance, and I'm not willing to take the chance...

I believe that the increased distance is so small that you will never notice it. I've installed ceramic pads on my cars several times and new ceramics stopped a lot better than worn semi-metallics that they replaced.

Good to know and thanks. Then I'll definitely consider them when it's time...

I read the same thing about braking distance and had some concerns as well. When I first put on the Akebono ceramics it didn't have that initial bite at first but after a couple of weeks there is less of a difference than the standard brakes. Akebono says to use them gently for the first 500 miles. Other pads have you bed them differently.
