Engine Compartment Very Hot - Even Hours later
My wife and I noticed this evening that my 2013 A6 was very hot, even about an hour after parking in the garage. It was radiating heat. It reminded me of when I walk by my large plasma TV when it's been on for a while and I can feel the heat it puts out.
It's not hot outside here yet, so I would not expect the vehicle to remain hot. I decided to leave the hood popped and just went back out and checked again, the engine is still hot to the touch though no loner radiating heat.
Thoughts? This seems abnormal to me.
Ambient temp in the garage is probably 70ish.

Were you driving it hard? Supercharged motors run lean when you beat on them, which would make it run and stay hot. It also has a 210° thermostat in it, which is ridiculously high. Thats where the coolant is gonna stay around, so if you put it away after hard running with no time to cool down, its gonna stay hot.
Otherwise, I have no explanation. I was saying in another thread that the A6 engine bay seems to have very good airflow, because it stays pretty cool. I run an open cone intake and my IATs are never much above ambient. Plus, I can work on just about anything in the bay less than an hour after shutting it down, comfortably, with no heat issues.

Nope. No hard driving. We had driven home from the store on city streets. Probably 15-20 minutes of driving after being parked for a while.
After three hours the engine was still too hot to touch.

Enable the lap timer with a vag com cable which also shows oil temperature. Also, if there was anything wrong, the car would let you know. Do you have a TDI by any chance? The iron block is an effective heat sink and I do notice that it tends to retain heat longer than my previous cars with the 3.0T.

It has seemed that my gas 3.0T is much cooler just after being parked in the garage than any other car I've owned.
If yours is a TDI, don't they periodically go through a cycle of carbon removal? If gas, it does seem unusual.

My threshold of pain is around 120*F. Learned that from checking motor bearings in the Navy. My chef daughter can remove pans from the oven that I wouldn't dare touch.

I believe you will find this perfectly normal. Mine has remained hot to warm at least 6 hours after parking it in the garage. Does not really get completely cooled down until at least 8-10 hours after shutting it off.
