Absolutely! Fire=bad, heatsinks=good.
The power rating is important and should be considered - in other word, don't use a wimpy little one.
A PTC is also a good choice in circuit.

As an aside there is no such animal as a CAN-BUS 'error free' LED.
It's about the current that is sensed.
