Default Alternator brushes worn beyond limits at 109,000 miles, for what it's worth

Well, one of them at 4 mm was. The brushes come attached to the voltage regulator. About $30 OE Bosch.

Easy to check and change.

I have about the same mileage. Is it a simple project of removing the alternator and changing the brushes? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Default It may be possible to do it on the car

Disconnect the battery first of course.

I had the alternator out, but it wouldn't surprise me if you can remove the back cover from the alternator without removing the alternator. It uses three screws close to the center and three integral clips around the edge. Once the cover is off, two screws hold the regulator and brushes. That's for a Bosch alternator.

On the 5V 4.2 at least, removing the oil filter cover (like during an oil change) let me get a socket wrench in to remove the big wire to the alternator.
