I'm helping a fellow board member with his 2001 S8. VAG COM does not see his original ECM. His original ECM is not communicating, it does power up, but will not start the engine. He got a cheap used ECM, plugged it in and voila, the engine starts, then dies because the ECM has not been paired to the cluster.

I'm lending him my http://www.ecutool.com/Super-VAG-KCAN_1025.html thingiemabob which will read the PIN for the new ECU. It can also read the cluster PIN. Immo is incorporated into the cluster on the facelift D2 A8 & S8.

Here is the problem: In order for the cluster to port over his car's Vin info to the donor ECM, he must first access the donor ECM using its PIN. No problem. Next step: Get the cluster to send over the VIN info for his car to the donor ECM by inputting the Original ECM PIN. The Original ECM ain't talking.

So is there any way to manually port over the VIN info from the cluster to a donor ECM when the original ECM is dead?

It may be encrypted in the original coding, but I'm not certain.

May need to contact Ross-Tech directly on this one...

Thanks for the reply. It occurred to me that the cluster must also "know" the original ecu's pin number, because once you put the Original ECU pin in the donor ECU, THEN the cluster is happy and sends over the vehicle's VIN info to be written onto the donor ECU.

I just don't think it is accessible there.

I'll update if we figure it out.
