IS SHE DEAD?!?! PLEASE HELP!!!
Hey everyone,
So i've got an issue with my S4 4.2.
Drove the car heard a loud rattling, started to misfire, pulled into to a gas station mechanics shop. (No they will not be working on the car, just paid them $20 for the diag)
They were able to pull these codes:
P0300
P0306
P0305
P0307
P0302
P0308
P0348
I've got a loud tickling/clicking from the passenger side, rough idle, and a lap full or tears because I'm afraid I have the timing chain issue everyones talking about. Anyone out there been down this road? Any chance it's just a sensor, or a loose gas cap?!? I've done some research but haven't found someone with the P0348 code and a loud ticking coming from the engine.

I think what you will find is that you have had the passenger side cam chain tensioner/guide fail.
My 4.2 (and others) have had this exact failure, where the plastic part of the chain tensioner/guide breaks, sending it into the exhaust cam sprocket.
In my case, it skipped a tooth, causing minimal contact with the pistons on the exhaust valves.
Here's at least a way you can validate if you skipped time:
Pull the passenger side valve cover. You will notice that on the front side of the cams that there are slots. If you turn the engine over BY HAND, you should get to a point where the slots line up with each other, and they should also be level with the cylinder head itself, such that you could slip the 'official' cam timing tool into place.
In my case, that was no possible, as the exhaust cam had skipped a tooth, and so I could get the intake cam lined up, but not the exhaust. I am in the process of re-assembling the engine, after opting for a full head resurface and valve job, along with replacement of all the other tensioners and guides.
I'll try to post pictures later.
Are you mechanically inclined? Pulling the valve cover isn't a terribly difficult job - except for the one or two bolts that are a bit difficult to get to.
