There are various pay-for-use-as-you-go providers that use the T-Mobile network with their own sim that will work as a potentially less expensive alternative (depending on use) to signing directly with T-Mobile. An AT&T sim will also work but only at 2G Edge speeds; Verizon will not as they use different cel frequencies.
