gear shift shakes

gear shift shakes
Hi! My gear shifter shakes, almost every time when I put it into the 2nd. It doesn't shake if any other gear is engaged. Only in second, it really annoys me, I'm even afraid of losing my transmission! If any of you find this problem familiar,or if anyone has ever experienced this shaking (in just one gear),please tell me what's the matter,so I can get it fixed! It's a manual 5-spd transmission(A4 1.8)

Re: gear shift shakes
IS it when you are coming off the clutch? Mine sometimes does this thing where it seems to pop and its done it since I have had the car. Cant figure out why. I have to come off the clutch very slowly to make this go away and its kinda annoying makes driving hard, well, a bit hard.
Also though, 1st to 2nd shift is the biggest gear ratio difference I believe so its tough to execute correctly. Not saying you arent, but its entirely possible you arent handling it properly (like I am).
Hope that helps

Re: gear shift shakes
it shakes when the clutch is released already, and it doesn't matter,it does that if I'm accelerating or braking or just putting my foot of the gas pedal. The gear lever shakes like I do when it's 20 below zero So I don't believe it has anything to do with the clutch or releasing the clutch. I hope it's nothing serious.

Re: gear shift shakes
My 5-spd manual gear shifter shakes too. But for me it is only when the 4th gear is engaged. All other gears works fine, and it is not happening every time I engage the 4th gear. It seems like it depends on how I shift to the 4th gear.
I belive (and hope) that it is only that the gear linkage need an adjustment.

Check your engine / transmission mounts and maybe engine mounts.
If they are OK fit an upgraded snub mount (available several places for around $50.)
This is a known problem on the longitudinal Audis. You have a large weight hanging off of the front end.
If you fit the upgraded mount adjust it carefully otherwise a lot of vibration makes its way inside the cabin.

If it were the mounts why would it only happen in second gear? All other gears are ok....and the shutter is felt in the stick shift..and through car when accelarating (under load) ....not coasting ..

Think about torque!
You have this 300 lb engine hanging off the front of the transmission. About 12 inches back from in the middle of the transmission are the drive shafts.
So when you accelerate the engine mass will rotate so the front will lift.In a lower gear acceleration is greater (not velocity)so the potential for twisting is higher in the lower gears.
On these cars it happens in all gears . That is why the snub mount is a common upgrade. However it's almost impossible to completely solve the problem.
Some people have used "allroad mounts" to help.
There is also a DTS upgrade which is more expensive.
Here's an earlier post.
