So last night was about 5 mins from being a disaster....

so some of you may remember i was cooking for my mom last night, for the first time in my life. Her and my step dad were visiting for a week (they are retired and just travel) so i figured i would return the favor and cook for the ole' ma, since she did it for me for 18+ years.

So anyways, i had 3 packages of Frenched lamb rack (see below) that i was going to do the mustard coated rack of lamb (recipe courtesy of thump). Now i had done this before, so it wasnt my first time. However, i had some new bakeware that i JUST bought from target. I purchased a 3 piece set of GLASS bakeware, as i wasn't going to be able to fit all 6 racks into my old cooking pan.

So i start cooking, (for 7 ppl, family+gf+and friend of mine), now mind you i live in a 1300 sq ft apt, so its not real huge. I put 4 of the racks in the bigger bakeware thing, and the 2 other racks in the smaller bakeware piece. Set the oven to 500 deg, per the instructions. Now for anyone who has done these, you know that they smoke ALOT, i knew this, and i expected. So 5 minutes into oven, smoke, couple minutes later and the smoke is REALLY rolling.

At 10 mins they are supposed to come out of the oven and then be breaded (cooked in 2 stages), at 9 mins, my kitchen looks like west yellowstone in 88'. I open the oven, and surely enough, the BRAND new glass bakeware had broken from the heat, the bigger one of the 2- the left corner had completely busted off and due to this it obvisouly dripped massive amounts of grease into the bottom of the oven...grease + 500 deg = smokey fire in oven.

My smoke alarms are both going NUTS, they are flashing fast as possible and are THIS close to setting off the sprinklers in my apts. My mom has a little ****zu, gf opens the front door to let smoke out and the lil dog beelines the **** out of the apt, he runs down all 3 flights of stairs. Everyone is panicing and running around, my mom is yelling for me to get baking soda to put the fire out "I DONT HAVE ANY BAKING SODA", as im fanning the smoke alarm and pressing the off button, praying it doesnt set off the sprinklers.

My bro finally grabs a towel and smothers the fire, eventually the smoke cleared out after about 30 mins. Miraculously, NONE of the meat had gotten burned from the fire, as the bottom of the pan was still intact. I pulled the meat out and transfered it to a new pan, finished cooking it, and it came out absolutely amazing...all in all a night i will never forget, and everyone got a great laugh and awesome meal afterwards.

Pretty funny experience for my gf, as just a few days prior to this was the first time she ever met my mom, she was LHAO though...and her and my mom really clicked...good times, even though my apt nearly burnt down due to some ****ty Target bakeware.

$60 worth of lamb and everyone was starving!...like i said, it was 5 mins from being a real disaster, lucky i opened the oven when i did.
