Default Paint Sealant?

A detailer recommended that he put a good sealant on the car as a base for the wax. Anybody ever heard of this? It this just extra cash spent that is not needed?

Default Don't waste your $$$$...You can buy a can of ScotchGuard for a few bucks and wax the car yourself

Default I worked at a VW/BMW dealer....

...part-time during college and full-time in the summer. I was a "lot boy"...doing all sorts of stuff around the dealership (driving 800 miles back from Tenn. in a 3-series convertible was fun!)

Anyway, part of my job involved cleaning up the new VW's that came off the transporters and preparing cars for delivery. They gave me very little instruction on how to do this, but luckily they had hired an anal-retentive perfectionist :-)

They used to have me ScotchGuard the seats and carpets (same spray-can that you can buy @ Pep Boys) and I also "sealed" the paint (Diamond Coat, if I remember correctly). So basically, they paid me $5.00/hour to do this work and then charged the consumer several hundred dollars for the paint sealing/ScotchGuarding. Of course I detailed my car ('85 Mercury Capri RS -- 13.99 quarter mile timeslip) on the clock too :-)

Default Re: Paint Sealant at VW/Audi Dealer

When I took delivery of the 99.5 1.8QSTip,
the dealer offered $400 for the paint sealant
job. Talk about overcharging the car buyers!
I didn't buy into that though.

Actually I'm not too sure where the paint
sealant is being applied - does it cover
the entire car? Does it include the bottom
of the car? (somewhat confused...)

I have the Clearcoat Black paint so the
paint sealant sounds like a good idea.
