Default Free: Ad Aware & Spybot together are good. Download: Giant Anti-Spyware

Giant is a really good program...it can be bought or found.

Default Firefox or an alternate browser is a good start.

Default if your IE is patched, it isn't the problem.

Make sure you keep up to date. Doesn't have any significant security holes in it right now. But until you remove the spyware you currently have, it'll be a mess no matter which browser you use.

Most important, be careful when a box comes up that says "click yes to downlod..." that you click the no box. If you click yes even once, you have to go back and clean your machine again. Again, changing browsers won't fix that problem either, it's up to you.
