So, I was driving on 287 into White Plains NY just now and in front of me pulls what I thought was a 2002 A6. The tail was all A6 but the lights were light on the top and that's why I assumed it was the 2002 model. Then I noticed that while the audi rings were on the decklid, there was no "A6" badging anywhere. So I pull along side of it, then around to the front and see a NJ plate that says "Vehicle Mfg." Once I saw the nose in my rear view mirror, I spotted the chrome surround on the lower grille and realized "this is the A4". Sure enough, a 2002 A4, DkRed/burgendy type color with tan interior. It had dual exhausts in the rear and xenon headlamps to boot.
My impressions, unfortunately, were not all that good. I've been waiting for this sucker for a while and I have to tell you that the comments I heard from just about everyone at the NY autoshow are justified: This car will not turn heads AT ALL. I can tell you, it will simply be mistaken as an A6... not a doubt in my mind. There is nothing about the car on the outside that makes you do a "WOW... That's Beautiful" double take like a Benz, BMW or the current A4 for that matter. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful car, but a new PASSAT will get more attention than this vehicle. It has nothing that makes the A4 a standout... no A4-specific styling element that makes you go wow. Even more shocking to me was that when it pulled up to a traffic light downtown, I was behind it and right along side of the 2002 model was a new S4 and the owner didn't turn ONCE to look at it. The current car has personality... somehow the 2002 lost it all in the translation. |

I see lots of new A4's here, and I swear that they are gorgeous. Of course we are used to the looks of our A4's, but the new is great...
