was telling me about the time when the apartment building I lived in was being constructed.
There were 3 or so houses on my street in 1952, and that she had to get approval from the neighborhood via papers being signed to let her live and purchase a house. She is Japanese and about 80 years old. She was relocated after the Japanese American relocation program, and before that, she was in some sort of camp. She was also saying how badly the "whites" (her words) were treating her and her family (2 kids and husband) and a hostile environment they created on this street. She wanted to move here because of the school district and the ability for her kids to go to school due to the bus route being run that included my street. Apparently, she wanted to buy a house in Nevada, and the real estate agent told her that he wouldn't sell the "orientals" any houses and another white guy purchased the house and then offered to sell it to her and her husband. Trippy stuff. There isn't quite like first hand experiences. All our lives, we go through learning about history but seldom do we engage older folks who have been through it. It makes all the facts less potent. |

It's sad that people become so myopic that they will abuse an entire ethnicity or culture purely because of popular/political sentiment. Alot of the lessons of WWII, and even things I hear people say today, remind me of the infamous "Obedience to Authority" experiment that Stanley Milgram did.
It's sad that it is so easy for people to hurt others.
