Default Silver to Gold, Alcon technology shining through at the track...

After another great ACNA event at the world famous Laguna Seca raceway I found myself staring at a pair of Alcon calipers that had taken the step from silver to gold...

I can't sing the praises of these brakes enough times, aside from being an employee of STaSIS Engineering. These brakes repeatedly handled hauling down an '01 Audi S4 Avant shod with 245 Toyo RA1 tires without batting an eyelash, so hard in fact that after one session the pads were on fire and creating quite the smoke show after pitting.

Laguna Seca is by far the hardest track on brakes that I have been on. The 996 GT3 _following_ suit for a full session can attest to how late you can take these brakes into a corner and how many times they can do this in a 20 minute session

I must applaud ACNA and specifically the Golden Gate Chapter for another great event. It is always a good time to see friends, eat good food, drink good drink and enjoy driving in a fun environment.

The freshly installed Motor Sport suspension 700/850 performed excellently, truly made the experience that much more enjoyable to have the control that driving at this level requires. Get out there and enjoy the up and coming track season!

Cheers,

Default Motorsports + Alcons + RA1s = fun track car. We just put Alcons on BRK's Pearl Avant:

weak point were the brake line banjo bolts. barely putting the listed torque spec on one of them, it snapped the head right off. thankfully, Goodridge sent us new ones for the price of over night shipping.

and, I've never heard of the pads that were supplied with the kit.

what I don't like about them is that you can't doing a quick pad swap without removing the caliper.

good thing seems to be the design of the hat.

Default You'd be surprised, two large diameter bolts versus multiple small bolts that can freeze...

in the caliper due to the types of metals used for the bolts and the caliper. I swapped pads in a set of Alcons faster than someone in the next stall over who had Stoptechs this last event, though I honestly I had no reason to rush, who does?

Just because the caliper must come off the rotor does not make it more complex or more difficult. In fact I find it easier than removing small allen bolts, which if not removed frequently or used in harsh environments will seize or strip, prying a bridge out, getting pistons retracted with the the caliper over the rotor, then re-assembling.

With an Alcon caliper you remove two 10mm head allen bolts (won't seize or strip), lift caliper up and turn over, pads slide out, you can use a clamp or spreading device since the caliper is off the rotor to retract pistons, slide new pads in, put caliper over rotor and bolt down.

...and let's be honest, who needs to change their pads under serious time constraints on a street car? Almost all driver training and track events feature at least an hour between run groups, some more. Endurance races can use the fastest method of pad changing, however you will rarely see any true race series where pads are changed in a feverish rush. The design of the Alcon Mono4 and Mono6 caliper is designed to be light and stiff to translate what pressure you put into the pedal into clamping forces on the rotor versus deflection.

Cheers,

Default I'm glad to hear that your banjo bolt issue was solved quickly...

Though that is the first failure of that type I have ever run into.

The pads are produced by Scandinavian Braking Systems (SBS) and you can learn more here about this supplier: SBS.

Changing the pads is quite simple and honestly when are any of us with street cars trying to change pads in less than a few minutes?

I hope that the brakes are enjoyed by the owner of the car and used to their fullest potential. If you or the owner of the car ever have any issues please don't hesitate to contact us.

Cheers,

Default "when are any of us with street cars trying to change pads in less than a few minutes?" at the track

especially being tired after a 2-day event, in the paddock, while packing up, to get the car street worthy to drive home -- especially if you're someone like me that uses race pads like Hawk HT10 that don't get enough heat on the street to be safe.

still...it's not that much more than Brembos or Stoptechs, which I've had issues with my STs' bridge bolt sleeves stripping from too many uses and had to take the caliper off anyway.

Default It takes the same effort and time for all of these setups...

and essentially what is trying to be conveyed is that it's about the performance of the product in the moment and over time. Changing pads after 2 days of driving and being tired is never pleasurable, ask how I know

Cheers,
