Default Time for Brake Pads...suggestions???

41,000 miles on the 2008 S8 and it's time for pads.

Really wanting to cut down on the brake dust so was thinking along the lines of the EBC Redstuff, however do not want to lose any performance as far as braking goes...

I am keeping the existing rotors for now so would like to know what you guys think as far as pads...not too sure how compatible the EBC's are with the OEM rotors.

Any recomendations are appreciated!!!

They will work just great. No compatibility issues.

If you're keeping the original rotors, I would definitely get them resurfaced before everything goes back together.

The EBC Red Stuff have been great. There is WAY less dust than the factory pads I took off. They grab equally well, or better (depending on who you ask). My only concern is that I have recently developed a brake squeak. In all fairness, I haven't investigated yet, so it may not be the Reds that were replaced. I'll deglaze the pads and rotors and everything will be fine again, whichever end it is. The other end has factory pads (and LOTS of dust.

I would also really consider replacing the rotors. I've seen recent posts of rotors available for as low as $19 each. At that price (or close to it) I wouldn't hesitate replacing them too. But, to each their own.

Carry on...

There was just a thread on here so don't really want to start up a new one. But I agreee with the EBC redstuff.

You won't find $19.00 rotors that will fit an S8. And those rotors may be a bit smaller in diameter than stock D3 A8 rotors.

I've found that my front and rear rotors last through two sets of pads. Front and rear. That's on an '04 A8 with 4.2L engine.

Appreciate the imformative response FlyTy!

What are some of the websites you guys use to buy OEM parts? I see them referenced all the time but can never remember them. Thinking I might as well do rotors like you say...

If I did get rotors I would for sure stay away from the drilled & slotted. However, what about just slotted?

Pros and Cons with them vs oem?

Sorry. You're absolutely correct. S8 rotors are more than 4.2L rotors.

I was only trying to make a point that it really wasn't too much more to replace the rotors at the same time, versus reusing them. And, it appears the OP got that out of the post. So, mission accomplished.

I agree that multiple sets of pads can be used on a single set of rotors. It's just my opinion that this is one of those areas I don't cheap-out on. Cheap-out might be the wrong term, but again, I'm just trying to illustrate a point, you know. I'll take short measures somewhere else, but not on brake equipment. (Or knock-off VCDS!)

To each their own, right?

As for some sites to buy parts to save money aside from a dealer who is the best bet because genuine parts were used to build your car;

To each their own.

With brake components, I follow the factory spec as far as rotors go. The vehicle stopping distances and fade resistance are tested and verified and degrade once certain wear is exceeded. I replace rotors when they fall below spec. Years ago, when the money was flowing (B. C. ; Before Children) I replaced rotors before they fell below spec. Heck, this was on VW Rabbits, Sciroccos, Audi 4000's and even my '87 Audi 5000CSTQ rears which were cheap. You could buy new rotors for under $30 each back in the early-mid '80's. I flenched when I had to buy the front ones because they were like $80 apiece.

I personally would never reface/turn a rotor. I'd let any uneven groove stay or replace it. Like you said, to each their own.
