Default Winding Road Issue: A6 vs GS comparo

Thought this was an interesting read. Also pretty much encompassed my feelings when I test drove both vehicles before ultimately deciding on the A6.

Good to see Lexus stepping into the performance department and putting good track numbers & nice features. But conclusion of article reflects the majority of us who felt the same & made decision to go with A6.

We toiled for *weeks* between the A6 and the Lexus GS350. I've been told that Lexus kind of abused that model in years past, but they've created a really spectacular car this time around. The 350 and the A6 are verrrry similar in terms of what they can do and what they offer. Performance-wise, I can't say that the 350 is even slightly inferior to the A6. They behave SO similarly - and yes, I put them both through some pretty extreme paces.

In the end, it was mostly a number of the little details that had nothing to do with performance that Audi paid attention to and Lexus didn't that sold us on the A6. Things like the split folding rear seats in the A6, the better lumbar system in the passenger seat (prestige package), the better lights and cabin ambiance, etc. Performance-wise, the only thing that really stood out was the suspension tuning features of the A6, which allowed a lot of control while the 350 only had regular and sport. In the end, it was these things that won out over Lexus's superior durability record and better holding of their value.

Even though we chose the Audi, I think Lexus deserves a round of applause for creating an awesome entry into the space. Give em an evolution or 2 and they'll be right there.

There are no suspension tuning options in the a6. It's steel springs and shocks. Audi drive select does nothing to the suspension.

But you still made the right choice :-)

Suspension, transmission, whatever. I typically call the sport settings a suspension setting, given that you end up feeling more of the road.

Speaking of settings, does the A6 retain the previously used setting (sport, comfort etc.) after being shut down and restarted? I know the new BMW's always reset back to the default setting (comfort I think) when the car is shut down.

It does keep the same setting. Not 100% sure if it is fob dependent, but everytime I turn on the car my settings are the same.

Thank you. That is very convenient as opposed to having to reset it to the setting you want every time you drive the car.

I think the Lexus GS350 F-Sport have adaptive suspension, but it doesnt have as much range as the Audi air suspension, which is only available in Europe, oh why oh why only in Europe Audi
The GS350 is a much improve car, but the engine design is pretty old. That was one of the issue I had with the GS, you really need to wind it up to feel the power. The other issue being the transformer looking front end, I was expecting it turn into a robot while I was driving it

Does anyone know why the US A6 does not have the air suspension? Is there a downside to having it?
