Default Brake noise while stationary

2005 A6 4.2L Quattro with sports package.. It's the single piston design calipers in the front.

So when I press on the brakes while stationary (or moving for that matter) there's some squeaking or creaking noise coming from the front left wheel. Has anyone ever seen this before? It went away for a while with new pads and a new dust cover for the piston (which doesn't seem to want to stay on there very well as it stretches out). With the misplaced dust cover, could the caliper be damaged and cause that noise? The pads are less than a year old at this point though so I'm doubting that that's the problem again..

Thoughts?

Thanks,
- JR

I have heard of it before on GM cars. They has a TSB out about it. Basically, it's the caliper piston making noise and they have a special lube to fix it. My Pontiac used to do it but the noise went away on it's own.

I've never heard of a wheel bearing making noise when stationary and applying the brakes. Usually bad bearings first make noise when turning.

I missed the word stationary in your post. So nix the wheel bearing.

Yea see that's why I'm thinking it has to do with the dust boot on the caliper not wanting to stay on there.. Thanks for the direction. You wouldn't happen to know off the top of your head where to find that TSB for the GM cars? I'll try Googling I guess. And the other thing is I need to figure out how to make the dust boot stay on there better. The end that's on the piston is fine, it's the side that's on the caliper that comes off all the time. I'd hate to use some sort of glue. Maybe I can file down the groove on the caliper to be slanted the other way...

Consider it nixed.

So I've fixed this and formulated a theory in the process..

The pads were practically new and the dust cover was in place as well. What seemed odd though that the two grooves that are on the face of the pad were full of dirt and/or break dust. Nut just a full, but packed in. Had to scrape them with a screwdriver to get them clean.

Click the image to open in full size.

Not the actual photo, but you get the idea. As the brakes are are used, dust is generated. The dust get in the two grooves on the pad. If the disks are worn, and there is a slight groove on the outer rim of the disk so that the dust that is generated does not have an escape path and hence packs into the groove.

So next up for me then is new disks.. but for now, I believe that's what was causing the creaking noise..
