At this point I'm using a 64gig SD card. I had to download some free software to format it to FAT32. It took a lot of experimenting before the MMI liked it, but now it's working very well. It might even sound slightly better than an iPod.

Don't you hit the ~4000 song limit way before needing a 64GB card?

No limit so far. I have 41gig and 5000 songs on the SD card.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to create playlists that the MMI will recognize. There is a Playlist option at the top of the SD card menu, but it stays grayed out no matter where I locate a M4U playlist file. My salesman said he would try to get some info on that and several problems with the NAV system. I won't hold my breath.

Has anyone tried to load a destination from their Phone Directory to the NAV Directory and start Route Guidance? I can't get that to work.

Two quick questions, may you give us a little more info on your vehicle. (year, model, etc)

Last, what drive are you trying to connect to the USB? Let us know both the manufacture and model # and I will dig a little with my engineers to see what can be done.

Tested media players/storage media for the vehicles Audi Q7, A6, A8,
A4 with navigation system and A5 with navigation system
Selected media player/storage media and their software versions are continually being tested for their compatibility with the
Audi music interface. Whether your media player/storage medium has been approved for use with the Audi music interface
can be found in the table below.
Which software version has been tested by Audi can be found in the table below. The software version of your media player
can be found in the instructions for use of your mobile terminal device.
Information on updating the software of your media player can be obtained from the equipment manufacturer. For some
media players, you can also download the software yourself from the internet.
Media player software version
Overview
The Audi music interface makes a connection possible between a suitable media player/storage medium and the vehicle.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the system is controlled via the radio, the MMI or the multifunction steering wheel.
Range of functions of the Audi music interface
While the vehicle is being driven, the media player/storage medium remains safely stowed away in the glove compartment
and is connected to the Audi music interface by a cable. This cable transmits not only the track information and music to the
Audi music interface, but at the same time also recharges the media player/storage medium.
Note:
A special adapter cable is needed to connect mobile terminal devices. This can be obtained as an Audi Genuine Accessory from
your dealer.

Or you can stream the audio from your Android or iPhone to the MMI.

I have a 2012 S4. The drive is a 500gig Seagate Expansion Drive model #ST905004EXA101-RK. Thanks for checking.

Waffles,

I already own 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 2 iPods and about a dozen Apple chargers, docks, etc. Thought I might get away with using a drive that I already own instead of making further investments in AAPL.

Jeffc, if you are set on getting this to work, I will open the USB AMI cable up today and let you know my findings. Seems to me that it might be a resistor matter which is not giving enough power to the drive. Or that the MMI system is taking way to long to recognize the data on the drive.

I do recall that there is a file format that the data on the drive needs to have so the MMI does not have issues identifying the files. Let me dig up a little more information and I will get back to you later today.
