I'd do a full timing belt service will all upper engine seals, change the leaky tailshaft seal in the trans, and do a auto trans fluid and filter change.

Check the tech section for timing belt, tailshaft, cam adjuster, cam shaft, and cam plug seals. There should also be something on changing/checking ATF.

LOL. No, you cannot "expect a good reliable unit for the next 75K". It's a 2000 year model car for crying out loud. Anything can pop, other than the the parts your put into it, and even then, questionable reliability of aftermarket or even less-than-production-line-quality OEM parts.

I just had a hose fail at the quick-disconnect fitting, a small hose that goes to the heater core from the back of the engine on my 2K4.2A6. That hose sells for $54 in Russia or Ukraine, but anywhere from $125 to $162 here in US. It's a simple heater hose for all practical purposes, but it has two unique fittings at both ends and it's a shaped hose to boot. It's also difficult to get to....

My point is that this OEM hose failed after 12 1/2 years...and I hold zero hope of a reliable unit for the next 75K miles...stuff happens on old cars. You got to give credit to Audi for hoses lasting even this long! I'm old enough to remember 4-5 year replacement cycles on upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses on US cars even with 180F thermostats...

(p/n 4B3819371B for enquiring minds)

And no, I'm not about to go on a reliability improvement kick by replacing all the hoses on the 4.2 V8...if stuff goes, you just replace it. You hope it doesn't require a tow (my personal definition of a reliability failure, BTW) but I fully expect to have to tow it once a year from here on in. If that irritates my wife enough we'll probably get a new car, but so far she hasn't found anything she likes more than the 4.2A6.

would this kit be everything I need ?

Where would you recomend I source a power steering pump and the aux electric coolant pump and or lines .
Is there a good reliable trusted vendor for all these parts besides the stealership ?

OEM PARTS
http://www.audipartsnationwide.com
http://www.autohausaz.com

I believe belt is made by CONTITECH, and water pump by Graf.
check parts number on http://www.audipartsnationwide.com first
don't use cheap parts on an audi.

Took another look today , the vally is dry . no water in the vee.
I will be removing the belt tomorrow to eliminate the PS pump as the source of the noise.
With luck it just needs a timing belt job with all the related seals.

Thanks for all the help guys .

Call Joe at Axis Motorsport. That kit only has two cam seals, no valve cover gaskets, cam adjuster seals or cam plugs.

So you would say dealing with this company and getting the timing kit and a valve cover seal kit as well ?
Or Just call the guy and tell him what I am up to and he will set me up with a custom kit?
sorry for the questions but , I have a few trusted vendors I use for my ALH VW and getting to know new vendors is all ways tough.

I would call him to make sure you get the right stuff with no overlap.

Ok I told the dealer that I was going to need to get around 800$ worth of parts and spend a lot of time installing them. I was thinking about letting them send it to the auction.
The head boss said the auction was too much of a bother . Would I take it for 4000$?

I am now the owner of a 2000 A6

I am having a hard time navigating this site still .
Is there a specific board for the transmission( tip ) in these cars ?
Or at least a maintainance thread on how to flush and fill ?

Will be placing an order for a PS flush and trans service ( once I figure out what sort of oil is the spec )and a timing kit with all the bells and gaskets and doo-dads .

No flushing! Flushing is for toilets only. Just change the fluid and replace the filter. Search the tech section under the resources tab at the top of this page.
