No problem but I'm not sure I understand. This is the only external mirror I can see listed for the A7. The screen shot is showing both the external and internal mirror. Can you let me know which mirror you are talking about ?

Thanks
JD

The A7 outside mirrors are unique. They are mounted on the door skins. The other models that have door mounted mirrors are the TT and R8. The rest of the Audi's have the mirrors mounted on the sail panels so their diagrams would show a triangular mounting plate.

They may have used a diagram of a TT/R8 mirror and relabeled it. The gasket should show a point at each end.

You were right, I was wrong. I did take a closer look, the diagram does show the correct mirror, and part number 8 is the gasket we are having the problems with.

Yes, the diagram shows the correct parts.

From the picture the dealer should be able to keep your existing mirror cover. I'm not sure about part 16 (painted piece that sits between the mirror and the door)
It appears that the assembly they have to order to replace the gasket (item 1) includes the complete interior mechanism of the mirror, but the painted parts (items 15 and 16) remain the existing ones, they are not replaced with a new one. So paint matching is not an issue.

That is a great relief, if in fact no painted part is involved!

FWIW, I forwarded some details to my dealer to see if he had heard of these complaints -- what surprises me is how quickly these issues develop (seems most of you only have a few thousand miles on your cars), so would think that this is a known issue at Audi.

His response:

"Spoke to our head Audi maintenance Manager, and we have not been seeing the mirror issue here. Audi does not have an active campaign to address the issue, so I think from a statistical standpoint, it must be uncommon. I will keep an eye on it, but let me know if you have any issues with it whatsoever."

The "active campaign" he refers to was explained as a system-wide way of tracking known parts or mechanical issues for models.

Take it for what it's worth -- there is no incentive for any dealer to own up to it and say "Yeah, I know this is a big issue, we knew it when we sold you the car, sorry we're working on it."

But the pervasiveness of the issue on this board across so many vehicles seems statistically significant to me.

My dealer demonstrated to me that they could not just remove and replace the gasket. Thus, they had to prime and paint a new lower half of the mirror unit which contains the gasket!

I don't follow other threads here but from THIS thread I wonder how many have actually reported and have repaired this issue? I hava not reported it yet & will not until I go in for service. Of those who have had the repair done from this thread, how many are there at this point? 5, 10 maybe? So at this point in time, it may NOT be statistically significant yet. But I'm sure it will be!

Michael Karesh has a car reliability website up and has a few A7s registered. So far reliability looks really good. It would be good if we all register and report issues to get a better (larger) population and indication of the true reliability.

The website is True Delta. It also has pricing info if you're still shopping.
