Default Stone in brake today...bad...anyone else experience this?

I drove on an asphalt street this morning that was being resurfaced. The top layers had been ground off. Loose stones were being thrown up into the wheel wells and made me crazy. I U-turned after a few hundred yards and got off the street. I immediately began hearing a very loud whirring sound. I opened my window and the sound became a screech. By the time I got into a parking lot, the screech was so loud that people across the lot turned their heads to see what was causing the horrible screeching sound.

Someone in the parking lot dipped their head near my wheel and determined that the sound was coming from the brakes. I immediately suspected that a stone had lodged into the brake shoe and was rubbing against the rotor. I called my Audi dealer's service department and the service representative immediately confirmed that the problem was likely a stone stuck in the brake shoe. He comforted me by insisting that the stone would not cause permanent damage; but I may be embarrassed by the noise while driving to the service department to have the stone removed.

At the end of the day, I got into my car with the intention of heading to the nearest Audi dealer. Upon moving the car, I realized that the noise was gone. I assume that during the course of the day, the brakes had dried and the stone had fallen out.

Has anyone else had this happen? I am worried that everytime I drive over road surfaces that throw stones, I am going to have the same experience. From the immediate recognition of the problem by the Audi service representative, I suspect that this is a common issue.

Pretty common problem - if it's gone, don't worry about it. Have the dealer look it over at the next visit.

I had it happen once on a BMW. It made quite a lot of noise. I had to remove the wheel to knock the rock out. IIRC, it was caught between the splash shield and the rotor.
