leaving ipod in car attached always - ok?

I bought a new ipod classic (160gb) to live in my A7 and serve as a hard drive. Only remove it to add music. Is it ok to leave it connected even when gone from vehicle? does it continue to get power? charge? Is it better to disconnect or turn off?
