Secondary air injection pump? as you can see, its bolted to rear of intake so as a minimum you'll have to unbolt it.
You MIGHT be able to cable tie it back far enough to clear the intake manifold...taking it out will involve releasing this oem clamps and replacing them with worm clamps and working with those corrugated hoses that may or may not break...they're old and plastic...do you feel lucky? |

Thanks... if that is it, what system is it a part of? What section of my Bentley manual should I look for it under?
And no unfortunately I don't feel lucky, but I'm gonna have to move it anyway! |

Well whatever it is, I should be able to unbolt it from the manifold, and also unbolt the three 5mm allens around the housing of the unit. This gives me just enough play to clear it from the upper edge of the manifold. Sounds good in theory anyway, we'll see how it goes when I'm ready to raise the manifold.
Still trying to figure out what it is...and what is different about my engine from the ones in all the other aux coolant pump threads? I've sifted through a ton of them, and haven't seen any pics that have this same unit...what's the deal? Thanks again for you patience and assistance.

In my Ebahn you just search for secondary air injection pump and it pops up. It's part of the, wait for it, secondary air injection system. Ta Dahhh!
I had a hard time finding it as part of any system; it finally showed up with a search. It may be part of intake manifold removal or emission system(s). The pic I saw wasn't exactly like your bit so I extrapolated and suggested your component may be an SAI pump (not familiar with the V6 engine, FWIW, the SAI pump on my V8 is under the engine behind the alternator which is at 7 o'clock to boot!) |

It is, in fact, the SAI as suggested. I would remove the hose that comes off the back and goes to each combi-valve first. You can just pull the hose off the tube - it's on their tigth and goes over a lip. Be gentle and pry hard (if that makes sense).
There are a couple more screws on the right side of the pump that hold it to a bracket, I believe they're 5 mm hex cap screws... Once you have all the screws out, you can just lift it straight up and out. You don't really need to remove the hose (except from the combi valves) but it will make it much easier to see things the first time. When you put it back on, make sure you get it over the lip on the pump. Edit: and yes, the SAI system injects air into the car upon cold starts in order to reduce emissions. It will be necessary in order for your car to pass inspections (if you care about that), but is not necessary for your car to run. It's a "green" item and some remove it entirely, but I have never seen the need. |
