Default Snapped timming chain

Hello everone, bought a 2.0 fsi a3 2004 model last week with 89,000 on the clock and the timming chain has managed to snap on it this week (gutted) wondering if anyone may know why or what further damage it is likely to have caused ? Cheers

Well it really depends on how long the engine ran after it broke. Just like timing belts, it can cause harm to the valves, cylinders and everything else around there.

Did you buy an extended warranty, cause this could be covered - if not, you're going to be more than gutted.

You may need a cylinder head. The timing chain snaps only if something gets jammed in the chain or sprockets. Once that happens, it can shear the sprockets from the cams and bump the timing off, bending the valves.

Does it really have a chain?? Those don't usually snap. Belts, however, are quite prone to snapping.

well i suppose you would only bend intake valves if indeed only the chain broke. i would just pull the head, replace the bent valves and it will be fine.

You can bend either sets of valves. I've seen the exhaust valves get trashed when the FSI cam lobe wore out and a piece of the FSI pump bucket lodged into the cam chain and sheared off the sprocket from the cam. That was more than just replacing valves.

There is now compression so the valves arnt bent..YESSSS. The car still wont start i am told this is because the cam belt and timming chain no longer run together so i need to buy a alignment tool is this correct ?
