Default Failure to communicate...

2000 A8 L is not communicating with the VAG COM. Trans is going into 'limp mode' frequently, but have no idea whats wrong becuase the code(s) can not be read. Anyone ever had a car not communicate ? What are the possible causes of non-communication ?!

Have never had the problem (non-communication or limp mode) but there is a fuse for the diagnostics...#9 top row, 10 amp. Would also want to look at the OBD port wiring, esp if the driver's knee panel has ever been removed. Next, I'd wanna look in the E-box (fresh air plenum) for any evidence of water intrusion.

Just guesses, but the progression I'd personally follow.

Added a DVD player (that plays audio through the radio) in the glove box, an XM reciever hard wired to the Euro AUDI NAV PLUS RNS-D that I installed inplace of the US market radio. That was several years ago, and I will say that at some point after those installs I started having some intermitent non-communication, but now it has lasted for months.
