Default Is double pane glass not popular in the US ?

Inspired by gb4.2's specs and some other recent models I'm puzzled.

My dealer has a low milage 2011 with every option except dual pane.
I mean everything, including B&O sound.
It seems odd that a $600 option was not included on the vehicle.

The glass is a must have for me on D4 and it's perplexing why it's seen so rarely.
Extra security is a nice bonus, but the acoustic properties are my main driver.

Guess it's a good excuse to put the 2013 on order next month

Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks-Jake

Knowing what I do about the better sound absorption characteristics of the laminated glass for the side windows (3 layers---glass/PVB/glass--similar to the windshield tri-laminate), for me, choosing this option was easy for me as well. I had it on two D3's (2005 and 2008). The added "security" of more difficult-to-break side windows certainly helps. I can't say that I have any experience in an A8 that doesn't have this option so that I could compare them with and without this option--to me, it's just a relatively low cost option that adds to the car functionally (to make it quieter inside) and from a sense of enhanced security.

To your point, it does seem odd that an almost fully loaded 2011 wouldn't have this option.

Have had the dual paned glass on all 3 of my A8s, and wouldn't take one without it. Not only does it provide the extra security and sound deadening aspects, but there's also an added thermal benefit which helps in cold/hot outside temp conditions to keep the car's occupants more comfortable. As indicated, a comparatively low cost option that significantly improves the ownership experience, IMO.

Default Transponders working through dual pane.

do the EZ pass and other transponders work through the double paned glass?

Short answer--yes.

Longer answer--Yes, the double-paned acoustic glass is nothing more than "windshield"-type glass used for the side windows rather than a single layer of glass for the side windows. Conventional windshields (and the double-paned acoustic side windows) are constructed by laminating 3 layers of material together---glass on both sides with a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) in the middle. These laminates are relatively transparent to EZ pass units and other transponders. You'll have no issues with these devices.

Drove a A8 with and without dual pane back to back. There is a noticeable difference at highway speed. Great option for $600 IMO. Just took delivery of my car and that was one of the options on the "must have" list.
