Default Differences between 1989 and 1991 audi 90 quattro

Hey I am new to the forum here at audiworld. I am wondering if there are any differences in the I5 models between a 1989 and 1991. I have found a 1989 one on kijiji in my area for 200 dollars that doesn't run according to the ad, and am thinking of fixing it up, or if I should wait around some more to find a 1991 if there are any serious differences between them.

Thanks
Dustovich

I bought my 1990 90 quattro 20v for $800, and it needed a top strut bearing, timing belt, water pump, fuel pressure regulator, O2 sensor, and exhaust. I've had my 20v for about 4 months, and I am constantly learning more about it. I have always loved mkII - mkIII european cars, but this Audi is by far the most complex and rewarding car I've owned. It requires a lot of research on the owners' part due to the fact there are just not many of these cars out there. Having previously owned a BMW E30, I was surprised to find the difference in availability of parts and literature between late-model BMWs and Audis; Audi owners have to dig a little more.
The 7A engine is a 2.3L I5 with a DOHC/20v cylinder head. Apparently there are two versions of this motor, with nothing to distinguish between the two other than production dates (changed around 03/90), and the serial number. The NG motor is the SOHC/10v version of the 2.3L I5. I've heard the 2.3's are built with higher-quality metals than the later 1.8's, and therefore will last quite a while.
Having only driven a 20v 90, I would recommend holding out for a 7A; first and foremost, because it comes with quattro. Secondly, even though the 7A is poorly tuned stock, I feel like it will wipe the floor with other audi 1.8T's and Subaru 2.0T's once it is properly tuned and turboed. Despite the rarity of these cars however, 034Motorsport has a lot to offer for the 7A including a complete turbo kit, which I hope to get my grubby paws on in the next year.
Hope this helps in some way!

i agree with the first part of you post. the second half is....not so true especially a turbo kit. the turbo kit is half way solution (you are already limited by many factors) with a full price tag and lots of of work.

just get a 3b or aan for the swap or build one 7A block if u r that good.

The differences in the early and late build 20Vs, is the ECU, header vs. exhaust manifold, and the ISV set up. Good is the header on the early build, bad is the ecu and ISV set up. Get a late build. Easiest way to tell is the ISV hose goes to the side of the intake manifold on the late build.

If you are going to change out to a 20VT later, buy the 10VQ and save a few bucks up front.

Does the Audi 80 quattro have the 7A 20v engine or the NG 10v engine?

The 80Q has a 10V. The 90Q could have either, but the 20V would only have been in the 1990 and 1991.
