Rear Bumber Painting - a DIY?

My rear bumper has some paint issues since I bought it on the E coast, as the pictures show. I need to get this eyesore of a bumper painted (rest of the car is super clean btw). I'm big on DIY, but I've never done autobody painting before. Is this something I should try myself? Would I save money after buying a sprayer, etc, etc? Or should I just remove and take to a professional? I would rather DIY not just for money reasons but for the learning experience.

In any case I'd appreciate any tips on the R&R of the rear bumper, and suggestions on the prep work for the bumper you see in the pics.

It's a 2001 A6 avant in case you're curious.

this thread got posted without pics. The attachment manager absolutely was not working. I hassled with it for about an hour. Tried about 3 different file formats, all 800x600 or less. Oh well. Maybe I'll try again later. Wouldn't think its that difficult.
