Check out Passatworld.com, I think there is a lot more info there for the 1.8T.
Turbo install is pretty simple if it's like the B5 Passat. I have a 98 Passat and the only prob is one of the 17mm (IIRC) exhaust manifold-to-turbo bolts is in a really tight spot - you may need a thin open end wrench (a regular high-quality one like snap-on will fit but not a craftsman); also torque specs are to be followed when working w/cast iron and big bolts. You will want to get some high-temp antiseize, and be sure to crank the engine with the ICM or coil wires disconnected (so it doesn't start) to get oil flowing through the turbo before starting. Also plan to integrate an oil and coolant change with the job, they are critical to turbo longetivity. Use only 502 spec (VW Approved) oil!!! Full synth baby! that turbo gets red hot in normal operation, if you drive over ~60% throttle. Let it cool down after driving by 1.) driving without boost for the last couple minutes and 2) let it idle for 30 seconds or more before shutting down. I have 125k on my 1.8T, with a Garrett chip (18PSI boost!)!
