Default Allroad alternator in A6?

I apologize if this is covered elsewhere, I looked for a few minutes, didn't see anything and I'm heaving a real bad day and don't feel like looking anymore. </rant>

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I need a new alternator and I'm on a pretty tight budget. I don't want to buy an autozone POS that's going to fail soon, but I am having trouble finding a decent new/reman for less than $3-400. I have found a "guaranteed working" used bosch 140amp one for under $100 off an allroad and was wondering if that would be a direct fit. (Both 2.7t engines) Also, is it at least somewhat safe using a used one? Or am I taking the same gamble as using an Autozone one?

Forgot to mention, my A6 is a 2001, the Allroad that the used alternator would come from is a 2002.

Try just picking up a new brush and regulator set and putting that in, you should be able to pick on up for 25 or less. They are super easy to put in if you have the alternator out. You may be able to replace it with the alternator in place if you are creative, but be careful the brushes are brittle.

Plus, you can source an alternator from pretty much every later model Audi, 1.8t, 4.2, 2.8, 2.7t. A 1998 A8 uses an 150amp Alt. with a cheap(cost) regulator/brush assembly.
