Default Any advice?

Looking to join the Audi A4 family

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello AudiWorld....
I am a current owner of a 2003 VW Passat v6 w/ tip ~190k

My girlfriend and I enjoy our Passat alot and are looking for a second car for us. We are very interested in purchasing a late 90's early 2000's A4 since they were based on the same platform. I've been only looking to spend between 3000-4000 dollars. I have found two that intrigue me and need some help deciding between the two, so I came here.

Any advice would be greatlt appreciated and helpful so thank you in advance.

The first one is a 1999 A4 Quattro v6 auto w/ tip w/ 187k miles black on black all leather asking price $3500
Cosmetically this car is in great shape for being over 10 years old. Nothing besides very little normal wear and tear. I go Saturday to test drive the car. I didn't get to the first day I took a look at it didn't have the time. The only thing the owner claims is wrong is an exhaust leak. When he started and ran the car for me it was apparent it was louder than you would suspect. Any ideas or things I should look for when I go test drive and run VAGCOM on it?

The second is a 1999 1.8T A4 auto w/ tip w/ 160k miles black on black all leather asking price $3900
This car is in the same condition cosmetically as the other one very well taken care of. Nothing besides very little normal wear and tear. I go Saturday to test drive the car as well. So here's the story owner of the dealer said he took it in as a trade-in late last week. They hadn't had anyone take a real look at it yet but they're asking 3900 for it. So I asked when they would get the chance to and he threw me the offer of AS IS 2900 w/o taxes and title. I talked it over with the girlfriend and grabbed the laptop. We went back to at least VAGCOM it and hear it run. So when it started up there was an alomst awful whining coming from the front of the car. Pulley maybe?? I'm not familiar with these engines so that's why I'm asking advice I don't need to get in over my head. I'll post the results of VAGCOM below. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Well did the power steering work. The whining could be the powersteering pump screaming from no fluid. Or its bad. Or The alternators bearings shot, a idler pully or tensioner pully is bad, timing belt stuff. All could be making the noise. See it needs a brake light switch, easy. The central lock stuff, ignore it, i see stuff in like every single audi/vw i scan at my job.

other thing to look at. Those engines are known for the pickup tube for the oil pump clogging and starving the engine of oil and causing the dreaded oil pressure light. Most of the time, they wont cause the oil light untill they have been at highway speeds for 10+ miles. And if they keep being drivin its worse and worse till the engines destroyed and the oil light is always on. So if you just idled it for a while in the parking lot or just went around the block, you wont know.

As far as price. I would say like 1800$ - 2000$ would be alot more fair with issues, How are the tires? Glass?

The tires on both cars look decent for at least the time being. The glass was all in good shape except for the side mirrors. They looked to be wearing away around the edges and working their way towards the middle of the mirror. Is this a common problem? They both have this issue. I go test drive both this weekend so I'll know alittle more about drivability and such then. Any other things I should look out for?
