Default ign, timing

luckily the repair manual doesnt tell you the 1.8 degree mark so i was wondering if it is supposed to be about 3 degrees BTDC as where mine is currently at and was is the proper way to check this ign. system since im used to vacuum advance

You can go a lot farther than that, actually. See here for a rundown:

Basically, the car will run better the more you advance it until it hits the peak of its power and then starts to fall off again. He says 12 degrees is a good bet, and that's about where I'm at. Never been happier.

You don't really have to go through the fuel mixture stuff if you don't want, just find a good sweet spot with the timing and leave it. If you have the means to test the mixture and all that you can certainly push it farther.
